Hurricane Preparedness Guidelines
At Quadvest, we know severe weather can impact our communities quickly. Our team prepares year-round to help maintain water and wastewater service before, during, and after major storms. However, it’s important that customer also have a personal emergency plan in place.
Use the tips below to help protect your household, your water supply, and your plumbing system during hurricane season.
Before the Storm
Build Your Emergency Water Supply
The CDC recommends storing at least 1 gallon of water per person, per day for 3 days for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and sanitation. Store extra water for pets, children, medical needs, or hot weather.
Water preparation tips:
- Keep unopened bottled water on hand when possible
- Store water in clean, tightly sealed containers
- Keep stored water in a cool, dark location
- Fill bathtubs or large containers with water for non-drinking uses, such as flushing toilets or cleaning
Protect Your Home’s Water System
If landfall is expected or evacuation notices are issued, consider taking steps to reduce potential damage to your home.
To help protect your hot water heater:
- Turn off the water at your home’s shut-off valve or meter
- Turn off the electrical breaker connected to the water heater
- Follow manufacturer guidance or contract a licensed plumber if you are unsure
During & After the Storm
Use Water Wisely
Severe weather can cause power outages, low water pressure, road closures, and temporary service interruptions. Conserving water during and immediately after a storm can help reduce strain on the system.
Customers are encouraged to:
- Avoid unnecessary water use
- Limit laundry, dishwashing, and long showers when possible
- Report water emergencies only through official Quadvest contact channels
If a Boil Water Notice Is Issued
A boil water notice may be issued if water pressure drops, a line breaks, or there is a concern that the water supply may not be safe to drink.
If this happens:
- Use bottled water when available
- Bring tap water to a full rolling boil for 1 minute
- Let water cool before drinking or using
- Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, preparing food, making ice, and giving water to pets
Quadvest will notify impacted customers when a boil water notice is issued and when it has been lifted.
Help Prevent Sewer Backups
Heavy rainfall can place extra strain on wastewater systems. You can help protect your home and neighborhood by keeping the wrong items out of drains and toilets.
Do not flush:
- Wipes, including “flushable” wipes
- Paper towels
- Feminine hygiene products
- Cotton swabs or dental floss
- Grease, fats, or cooking oil
- Food scraps
Only flush toilet paper and human waste.
